02. Microsoft Kinect in Digital Signage

May 24, 2012

Imagine walking up to a screen and being able to control it just by moving your hands. Simply move your hand and watch the cursor move with it. A simple wave and the screen would flip to the next slide, or a simple gesture to zoom into the screen. These options are no longer science-fiction material thanks to the increased development in motion tracking in the Microsoft Kinect.

The Kinect was initially developed for Xbox 360, to allow gamers to interact with the game by moving their body. A Kinect was released for Windows along with a software development kit to allow anyone to manipulate it. This new Kinect is ideal for our interactive screen as not only has it improved in accuracy of motion detection, but also allows users to be much closer to the device than the Xbox variation. Additional feature is the voice recognition, which opens even more possibilities in digital signage for the future.

Vodigi, an open source software, that recognizes this technology and added support in their latest software version, where they believe the traditional mouse has been replaced with the Kinect. In other words, users can move their hand to a button in the corner that will bring up an overlay with options that they can select.

We plan to use these attributes of both Kinect and Vodigi by setting the initial slide to show the new content and once in the menu the user can select other options, such as go open up the faculty directory slide to see what is there.
